Overview
Project DescriptionThe Model Senate Project allowed us to explore the intricacies of Congress. After background research and lessons on the issues of finance and the environment, each student was assigned a Senator. As our Senators, we researched and developed stances on the two issues, and wrote legislation and speeches specific to our assigned committee. The project reached its peak at exhibition, where we formally assembled to discuss and amend the final two bills, and come to a vote on them. The final result was the passage of my bill, the Defense Spending Redistribution Act, and the failure of the Hold It All In Act, despite valiant Republican efforts.

My Senator I was assigned Democratic Senator Harry Reid, representing Nevada. He is the Minority Leader, and has spent 28 of his 75 years in the Senate. Throughout those years, he worked his way up from Lieutenant Governor of Nevada to the House of Representatives, to Party Whip, and finally, Party Leader. For this project, I served on the Finance Committee and authored the Defense Spending Redistribution Act
For my job, I worked with Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (Vivi Heinrich) to determine the Senate Floor schedule, run parliamentary procedure on the floor, author a bill, and write a speech. |
