I thought that Ben Carson’s stance on gay marriage and homosexuality brought in an interesting mix of moral values. He said that just because he believes marriage is between a man and a woman doesn’t mean he’s a homophobe. This comes from a question about why Carson would work at a company that supports the gay community. He referenced the Bible in his claim that people should only be able to marry the opposite gender, but didn’t carry his religion over to actual gay people themselves, just their ability to get married.
This clearly indicates that Carson really values Purity/Sanctity, as he would like for things to stay within the rules he believes his religion dictates. He values tradition and “family values”, and therefore only supports traditional marriages. This almost brings in the moral of Authority as well, as he lives his life guided by his religion, and respects above all else the principles upon which his religion was founded.
That he doesn’t carry his beliefs about gay marriage to homosexuality in general is really interesting. He says, “I believe that our Constitution protects everybody regardless of their sexual orientation.” I think that this belief also falls under the category of Authority, and that here he is replacing his respect of the Bible with his respect of the Constitution and the wishes of the Founding Fathers. I think it’s really interesting how he can flip the same morals around to both attack and defend gay people.
