The only candidate debating tonight that supports the Common Core is Jeb Bush. He argues that the states have enough say in their educational standards. In particular, this stance is opposite, Rand Paul, Bobby Jindal, Scott Walker, and Chris Christie, who counter that the Common Core is "anti-American propaganda". Looking at the strong stance that most Republicans are taking on this issue, I wonder exactly which aspect of the Common Core is un-American and why. I understand that, in general, the GOP frowns upon the federal government being so involved in policy that the states can figure out for themselves, but other than that, shaming the Common Core for being anti-American doesn't seem to hold much merit. To me, conservative dissent with the Common Core seems less about the policy itself and more about the federal government being the ones enforcing that policy, so it doesn't make sense to me that most of the candidates feel so strongly about this issue in particular.
Of all the issues the candidates will be grappling with tonight, I believe that education and climate change are the most important, and are almost linked in a way. I believe education is important because most of the bad schools are in poorer districts, and with education being the door opener that it is, the lack of access to a solid education only serves to further perpetuate that poverty. As for the Common Core, I think that when educational ideologies between the states differ so much and the way subjects are taught can vary as well, a federally-provided baseline seems to be the best way to ensure that we are educating future generations about things that will impact their future as much as climate change.
