Project Description To start off the Polynomials Project, each student found an image with curves in it, whether that be the architecture of a bridge or the flow of Rapunzel's hair. Personally, I chose a picture of a fire hydrant from outside the school. Then, we sketched out the curves using Vis-A-Vis markers on transparent graphing sheets. We used the zeros of the graphed polynomials to write the corresponding equations and apply a scale to them so they could be graphed on our calculators. Taking the original image away so only the polynomials were visible, we made a new picture with the resulting curves. My project underwent the transformation from a fire hydrant to a strand of DNA, as my polynomials interwove in a way that reminded me of what we were learning in Biology.
Project Reflection This was one of my favorite math projects of the year. I really enjoyed the integration of art into Algebra II, and was kept engaged by the gradual step-by-step process. The workload was kept pretty consistent throughout the project, which was really helpful for me to establish a suitable working pace.
