I think that Hillary came out kicking in this first democratic primary debate. She was prepared for the inevitable criticism of her past political experiences, and responded to allegations about her emails with grace and firmness. While she definitely made some good points, I thought it was a little detrimental to her public image to constantly be on the defensive during the debate, and to have so many blunders that she could be asked about. When she wasn't defending herself, it seemed she was just reiterating what Bernie Sanders said, only slightly more toned down and palpable for a more centric voter.
Bernie, on the other hand, stuck to his guns. As a less familiar candidate than Hillary, he did a fantastic job of distinguishing himself from the other candidates and clearly establishing his stances on the important issues. He emphasized the importance of taking on Wall Street, and suggested we follow the lead of countries like Norway and Sweden. His strong stances and passionate tone really made him stand out.
Because of this, I think the debate was a close one between Clinton and Sanders. Granted, Hillary had some harder questions to tackle due to her political past, but this doesn't concede much considering that Bernie Sanders also has a long political history with far less scandals. Therefore, I think in this debate Sanders distinguished himself as a force to be reckoned with this election season.
